Assessment

Understanding MYP Assessment & Criterion Grading

MYP assessment is criterion-related and continuous. Rather than relying solely on traditional percentages or grading on a curve, student achievement is evaluated against pre-determined, published IB assessment criteria (describing levels 1–8).

  • Each subject group uses four criteria (A, B, C, D), each with a maximum score of 8.
  • At the end of an assessment cycle, criterion scores are combined and converted into a final IB Grade from 1 to 7.
  • Teachers use “best-fit” descriptors and command terms (e.g., state, outline, describe, explain, evaluate) to determine precise achievement levels.
Service as Action

Service as Action (SaA)

Action and service are core components of the MYP. Through Service as Action, students apply classroom learning to real-world context, addressing community and environmental needs. SaA helps students develop empathy, social responsibility, self-confidence, and leadership skills.

Interdisciplinary learning

Interdisciplinary Learning (IDU)

In each year of the MYP, students engage in at least one collaboratively planned Interdisciplinary Unit (IDU) that combines two or more subject disciplines. Interdisciplinary learning teaches students to synthesize concepts across fields, make connections, and solve complex problems that cannot be addressed through a single lens.

The MYP Personal Project
Grade 10 / MYP Year 5

The MYP Personal Project

The Personal Project is the culminating experience of the MYP. It is an independent, student-driven inquiry where students explore a topic of personal passion over several months, resulting in a creative product or outcome and a comprehensive report.

Personal Project Assessment Criteria

The Personal Project is evaluated using three equally weighted criteria, each with a maximum score of 8:

Criterion Objective Max Level
Criterion A: Planning Developing a learning goal and product outcome, creating success criteria, and formulating a detailed plan. 8
Criterion B: Applying Skills Applying Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills (e.g., communication, critical thinking, self-management) to achieve goals. 8
Criterion C: Reflecting Evaluating the final product against success criteria and reflecting on personal growth and learning impact. 8

Requirements for the MYP Certificate of Completion

To achieve the official IB MYP Certificate, students must fulfill key program requirements:

  • Complete assessments across all required MYP subject groups.
  • Submit and successfully pass the MYP Personal Project (reaching standard achievement levels across Criteria A, B, and C).
  • Fulfill all school and IB expectations for Service as Action.
  • Meet the required attendance and academic criteria set by the school and IB regulations.
